Meet Dr. Agitha ValiakalayilPh.D., R.Psych.
Dr. Agitha Valiakalayil assists clients to optimize their personal resources in the context of a safe and respectful therapeutic relationship. She takes an integrative, client-centered approach in her work, drawing from empirically supported treatments (e.g., cognitive-behavioural therapy, interpersonal therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, mindfulness) in assisting clients in their recovery from mental health issues. She specializes in dealing with mood and anxiety disorders, interpersonal difficulties, assertiveness, trauma, self-esteem, and stress management.
Agitha is a Registered Psychologist with the College of Alberta Psychologists and is also a member of the Psychologists Association of Alberta and the Canadian Psychological Association. She completed undergraduate degrees in Biology and Psychology, and a Master’s degree in Psychiatry, at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. Agitha has also completed her PhD studies in Clinical Psychology at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. Her doctoral dissertation research examines stress and depression discourses on self-help websites.
Agitha completed her doctoral residency training with the Calgary Clinical Psychology Residency program in 2013. During graduate training, she completed practica in diverse settings such as a community mental health clinic, hospital health psychology department, chronic pain centre, long-term care, and private practice. She has also worked in primary care clinics providing behavioural health consultation services. Agitha has also spent several years conducting psychiatric research in Canada and England.
